U.S East Coast Road Trip

This road trip can be done in one go if you have time or can be taken over two or more trips. I didn't do it all in one trip. We did the Orlando to Washington D.C In one trip though, stopping for several nights on the way. Never attempt to do a road trip too quickly. You need to appreciate the different sites on the way. Fly to Miami. Spend a couple of days here to recover from jet lag and relax on the beach. South Beach is the lively part, or Miami Beach if you want somewhere quieter. See my page on Florida for what to do in Florida. here you can feel the Spanish, Cuban and South American influence all around you. Take a ride along the Everglades too in an air boat if you get a chance. Enjoy the seafood, Cuban and cosmopolitan food choices in this city. Take a stroll around the street art at Wynwood Walls. Miami is constantly evolving. We have been there many times and it feels slightly different each time. Do allow time at the airport though, this airport is very busy! If you have time take a trip down to Key West. We did this once and I really enjoyed the Caribbean, Liberal vibes there. It is quite unlike anywhere else in the Southern States! |

- Then Drive to Orlando. Having family here, I know it well and have been visiting this city every year for over 26 years! It is one city that doesn't really change much. It is a family resort dedicated to fun and shopping. Visit some Theme parks or go shopping. My favourite malls are Mall at Millenia and the Premium Outlets. For the theme parks it is best to buy tickets online in advance as a package of two or more. Public transport is terrible here, so do hire a car. I recommend Alamo.
Then head north to Savannah, Georgia. You must visit the beautiful historic downtown area. Listen to some Jazz while enjoying a nice Al Fresco meal. Enjoy good old fashioned Southern hospitality in this beautiful city, which I would recommend visiting. |
Then drive to Myrtle Beach and just relax on the beach there. We stayed at The Hilton Royal Palms Condos and enjoyed this view. on the left I would recommend this accommodation, especially for families. Myrtle Beach is just a seaside resort, so I wouldn't recommend you stay for long, but it is a great place to relax on the beach to break up your road trip! |
From Myrtle Beach drive north to Williamsburg, Virginia. This is a pretty little historic town and well worth a visit. Whilst there visit the colonial old town and the beautiful Campus of the College of William and Mary, featured to the right. This university is very good as my daughter went there and enjoyed it, I can recommend it. Visit the Wren building and do a campus tour. The students are very friendly if you avoid exam times. |

From here head to Washington DC. Here you can visit the White House and Capitol Hill, as well as many museums and memorials. Stay somewhere close to the White House area. We stayed in the Hampton Inn White House, which was very good value for money. Then drive on to New York ( I think everyone knows how much there is to see and do there!) Here is Trip Advisor's top suggestions anyway. Things to do in New York. There is so much to see and do in New York. I have been here a few times.
Then on further to my favourite city on the East Coast, Boston. Don't forget to walk the red trail route around Boston. We thoroughly enjoyed that. Also pop in and visit Harvard and M.I.T. You can fly home from Boston. Things to do in Boston. Also see my page on Boston. You can also carry on exploring the rest of New England and up to Maine if you wish as it is beautiful here, certainly my favourite part of the East Coast, but very cold in the winter.
The total driving time is 26 hours, 1,696 miles. You can fly on direct flights from Heathrow to Miami and return from Boston on British Airways. Don't forget the North East from Washington D.C and north gets very severe winters so this itinerary is best suited from May - September. Please look at the rest of my website as some of these places mentioned are covered in more detail on other pages.

From Boston we headed North towards Montreal, Canada through New Hampshire and stopped in the Cute city of Burlington, Vermont. (Pictured below.) This would be a spectacular drive in Autumn! Or you could head to the East of New Hampshire and Maine, stopping at Portland, Maine. Or another option is to visit Rhode Island and Martha's Vineyard and fly home from Boston.
