Granada
Granada, which means Pomegranate is situated at the foothills of the snow covered Sierra Nevada mountains. The UNESCO heritage site the Awe inspiring Alhambra Palace, looks down over the quaint old town and is walkable from there. There is also a buzzing modern part of the city, a huge shopping mall and everything you would possibly need in this lively student city. I have visited this city several times and really love it. It does get cold in winter though, with ski resorts nearby. When you wander along the cobbled alleyways of the old town, your eyes are drawn upwards to the Alhambra, which is perched on the top of the hill, asserting it's importance to the city of Granada. The weather ranges from 0c in January to 34c or beyond in July.

Places to stay
We stayed in an Airbnb In Monachil, a sleepy small town nestled in the mountains, just a few minutes drive from Granada, with great walks available from there. (Photo below on the right.)
The best areas to stay in Granada itself would be Centro, Beiro, Sacramonte and Realejo. Albacin has a higher drug problem, but isn't really unsafe. I don't think anywhere I have been to in Granada felt unsafe.
