France
France is synonymous with sophistication, fresh food, villages that haven't changed in many years and people that will fiercely defend their culture, still buying fresh food daily, buying books from bookshops and taking time over preparing and eating their food. Do not expect quick service in a restaurant, especially away from tourist areas.
Cheese and fresh bread is a major part of the diet here. Dairy products feature prominently as butter is used in many recipes, so if like myself you are lactose intolerant, I suggest taking some lactase supplements with you.
To us Brits, a trip to France as a child is something most of us can remember. For me my first experiences of France was a day trip on the ferry, followed by a summer holiday in Brittany and then a cultural trip to Paris.
Most of the world think of the French as people that are always on strike, but in reality they really do fight for their rights and enjoy a very good work/life balance and many benefits. Their retirement age is still lower than ours.
France is a large country with lakes, mountains, beaches, beautiful countryside and vibrant cities. All budgets are catered for here, with plentiful camping, gites (which are usually farmhouses and villas for self catering ) and luxury hotels and chateaus.
Below are places I have recently visited, so the advice is still relevant.
