Safety
As with most major cities, you do need to be aware of the potential of crime. I would advise you not to travel south of the Blue line on the train system Marta as there are no tourist attractions there and it is a higher crime area than the rest of the city.
The King Memorial sits on the blue line and when we visited it a few years ago I didn't feel safe there, but it has improved in recent years, however I wouldn't walk around in that area, get a taxi or hire a car. Basically avoid the area between the Airport and Five Points. North of Five Points is fine. Shopping
The main shopping area in Atlanta is in the Buckhead area, where the Lenox Mall is located. We visited this mall and enjoyed it. Westside in Midtown is also popular.
Where to stay
The popular areas to stay are Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead. Whilst Buckhead is the most upmarket area, we stayed in Midtown, which was very convenient to get anywhere and Peachtree Street in Midtown had lots of restaurants and cafes and the Fox Theatre. I would recommend staying on or near Peachtree Street. It is easy to get around on the train (MARTA system), just $2.50 to get anywhere including the airport.
Midtown is also home to many businesses including the headquarters of NCR. Other companies headquartered in Atlanta include Home Depot, UPS, Coca Cola, Delta Airlines, Mercedes Benz USA, Daimler, Sun Trust Bank,
Atlanta also hosted the Olympics in 1996. You can visit the Centennial park pictured below. |
Popular places to visit from Atlanta include Savannah and Stone Mountain theme park ( This is a popular park, however there is a confederate monument there and KKK links, so we chose not to go there, but you will see this listed on tourist sites.) Some historical sites you can also visit are listed here. For more tourist information, take a look at this site.
